Part 4 of the Vaulted Strawbale Series:

Mud and Earth Plastering

Saturday& Sunday - Aug  4th - 5th (9 am - 4:30 pm)

This is the fourth  seminar in the four-part series on building a vaulted straw bale building.  This workshop continues the skills learned in the previous seminars - but each workshop is also a “stand-alone” experience.  You do not have to take part one  of this series to participate in part four (and so on).

Part four focuses on all aspects of interior and exterior earth plastering, including base coats, scratch coats, and finish coating.  As this process requires some drying times, we will likely work on several projects to learn all phases of the process during the two-day workshop.

The Workshop Agenda includes:

  • Orientation/quick tour of Blue Rock Station.
  • The theory of earth plastering.
  • How to mix the various coats, including cobb, base coat, scratch coat, finish coat and exterior coats (areas exposed to the weather).
  • Applying cobb.
  • Applying the base coat.
  • Applying the scratch coat.
  • Applying the finish coats.
  • Creating shelves or other free-form objects
  • Finishing and sealing options.
  • Mixing and applying the Aliz (finishing it off).

The Straw Bale Vault Building:

This basic project incorporates all the skills and techniques that you will need to tackle different size projects (like building your own dream mansion or a garden shed out of straw bales).  But the scale of the vaulted straw bale building is small enough for a beginner “green builder” to learn without being overwhelmed - useful techniques for big or small building projects.  Also the Vaulted Straw Bale building is pretty cool all by itself and makes a great garden shed, play house, guest room or getaway cabin.

Given the size and nature of this project, we will work under a canopy - so the event will proceed rain or shine .

Come prepared to work hard, have fun, discuss politics, eat terrific locally grown food (lunches and snacks are provided), make friends, sweat, have a proper cup of tea - then sit in the shade and admire all you have accomplished.

Workshop questions and logistics (such as what to bring, where to stay, meals, local attractions, directions, and the like).

Discount scholarships  are available based on circumstances, also multiple registration discounts, and discounts for residents of Morgan and Muskingum Counties (Ohio) are available as well.

Class size is limited to 10 students, so please reserve your spot early.  You will also see below that deep discounts are available to those who register early.  For reservations, call us at (740) 674-4300, e-mail annie@bluerockstation.com  or register instantly and pay by credit card by clicking the little buttons below...
