Solar Cooking at Ducan Falls Elementatry
May 22, 2007
Some local students attempted to set a world record today.
Fifth graders at Duncan Falls Elementary School held a Solar Cooking Festival where they had 144 solar ovens cooking at the same time.
They are waiting to hear if the solar oven category qualifies for the Guinness Book of World Records. Students say even if it isn' t a record they had fun doing the project.
"This is the first time I've made a solar oven and I really anted to know how it would look and how warm it would get and stuff like that," said Trey Ford, fifth grader.
Teams of students also made their own versions of salsa and chutney recipes in an effort to promote math skills, journal writing and healthy eating.
"I feel really strongly that we have a debt to our kids and we need to encourage them about renewable energy because that' s the future for Ohio and the world," said organizer Annie Warmke.
A special award was presented to the students from OhioGreenLiving.org to recognize the event.
