Creating Your Own Backyard Solar Oven

Sunday - May  2nd  (1 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

A solar oven is an amazing little project that is a great way we’ve found to re-heat food, cook sweet corn to perfection and keep the heat out of the kitchen...AND using one may have huge ramifications to our earth - as our resources become more and more scarce.

Groups such as Solar Cookers International have been introducing solar cookers around the world (especially in those nations that are poor in resources but rich in sunlight) for decades.  We’ve been using a simple two-cardboard box solar oven for over 9 years and when people visit us they are mesmerized by how the sun can so easily cook much of the food that we eat during the summer  here at The Station.

With little more than a cardboard box, some clear plastic wrap, a bit of paint, some aluminum foil and knowledge about how this all works - you can create your own durable oven.

You will be absolutely amazed at how well these ovens work - reaching cooking temperatures of 225 degrees Fahrenheit with no more than the sunlight for energy.  Great for camping, pasteurizing water, or everyday use.

The Workshop Agenda includes:

  • Orientation/ quick tour of Blue Rock Station.
  • How Solar Cookers work.
  • The three types of cookers:  box, parabolics, and panel cookers
  • The materials you need
  • Hands-on building your cooker
  • Tour of Blue Rock Station
  • A relaxing snack with a proper cup of tea

You will leave this workshop with a working solar cooker (that you built yourself) as well as the knowledge to create additional ovens at home.  You may  get to see and use the brand new permanent solar oven we plan to construct sometime this summer.  Our goal is to create the new oven in The Greenhouse so we can use solar cooking year round.

Class size is limited to 10 students, so please reserve your spot early.  You will also see below that deep discounts are available to those who register early.  For reservations, call us at (740) 674-4300, e-mail annie@bluerockstation.com  or register instantly and pay by credit card by clicking the little buttons below...
