Llama Trek
Sunday, October 21 2012, 10:00am - 2:00pm

If you have ever thought about adding a llama to your life, you will want to visit Blue Rock Station for a cup of tea and a lively afternoon of learning about what it takes to raise llamas.

Or if you simply wish to take a peaceful stroll in the woods with a gentle companion - this llama trekking adventure is for you.

We will begin your visit with  a brief workshop on the proper way to handle a llama.  This is a very "hands-on" workshop.  We will learn how to catch and halter a llama (not always an easy task).  Then we will groom the critter,  clip their hoofs (when required), check them for injury or parasites and generally give them a complete checkup.

In addition to working with the llamas, you will learn the answers to…

  • What is involved in raising llamas
  • Why llamas make good starter animals for 4-H
  • Why you need to have at least two llamas
  • What types of equipment you will need
  • How to Groom and shear llamas
  • Feeding, worming, and general health concerns
Date:
(Registration fee, $35 per person)
Date:
(Age 12 and under, $25 per person)

Then we will take them on a trek through the woodland paths at Blue Rock Station -stopping for a relaxing cup of lemonade, or hot cider, as well as a snack in the beech grove.

The trek is along broad clear paths and typically last about one hour.   While it is not overly strenuous, there are hills - so participants should be moderately fit.

After our trek through the woods we will sit down to a relaxing discussion in the Earthship over cheese, desert and a steaming cup of British tea, served up in a vintage china cup.

Then we will take a tour of Blue Rock Station - strolling the grounds, feeding the rare breed chickens, checking out all the cool buildings and visiting the Earthship (Ohio’s first - a home made of tires, cans, bottles, and earth).

This is NOT a sales event disguised as a workshop.  We have no llamas for sale, so be prepared for an educational and fun event.

Llama Trekking in the Blue Rock Region

Walk the scenic hills of this Appalachian river valley region with a companion who will not interrupt the silence... the serenity.

Better still, this companion will carry your pack for you, leaving you free simply to enjoy a leisurely stroll through nature.  Occasionally he might even lean over and nuzzle you a bit as you stare off into the distance.

We will begin with a tour of Blue Rock Station.  We will then conduct a brief llama care clinic - learning what is involved in caring for and dealing with these gentle and noble animals.

Then it is off into the woodlands of Blue Rock Station.  JoJo, Sgt. Pepper, Rita and Baxter will carry a light snack that we will enjoy in the heart of the maple grove, sitting under the thick canopy of grand maples and American birch trees.

Children and adults that act like children are welcome - provided they can walk for up to two hours (the llamas cannot carry them).   There are several hills that we will tackle on our walk - so you should be relatively fit before attempting this adventure.

Treks are available by appointment only.  The dates listed on our website are confirmed - or give us a call (1-740-674-4300) to set up your own date.  Individual rates are $35 for adults, $25 for children (12 and under) -  this includes the trek, tour, clinic, snack and tea.

For more information or to register please telephone (740) 674-4300 and ask for Annie, or e-mail us at Annie@bluerockstation.com Or register by clicking one of the buttons below.
