Back in the 1940’s, people helped to support their families and the war effort by creating “Victory Gardens”.  They did this by growing produce either in their own yards, or by pooling resources and growing food with their neighbors in a community garden.

At Blue Rock Station we are eager to share our resources and our goal is to encourage the world around us to grow their own food and flowers with the added benefit of also saving their own seeds.  Starting in 2006 we are forming the Blue Rock Station Heirloom Garden Club.

Our gardens – a cottage garden, a kitchen garden and an herb garden have just finished their first season, and we are still in the process of deciding what works, and what doesn’t.

We recognize that not everyone has learned how to garden with the environment in mind (we’re still learning and experimenting ourselves), or has the space to create a place to grow produce so we decided to establish the Blue Rock Station Garden Club.

Each month from March through October we will be offering a different theme that will enable the members to learn more about growing produce and flowers (this is in addition to our monthly luncheon workshops).  In our own gardens we plan to grow heirloom vegetables and fruits whenever possible so that we will be able to save seeds year after year.

$25.00 2006 Heirloom Garden Club Membership
How to participate in the Heirloom Garden Club:
There are three ways to participate in gardening at Blue Rock Station:
1.   You can join the BRS Heirloom Garden Club for $25 for the year (March through October).  Club members may then participate in monthly meetings in which we will discuss a wide range of gardening topics and concepts.  The monthly topics are listed below.  The monthly workshop for the club costs $5 and includes tea and cookies.    A perfect opportunity to network with folks who love gardening as much as you do.

2.   As a member of the garden club – you will be able to the gardens of BRS each Thursday and Saturday.  During these sessions we will put into practice what we have learned throughout the year – practicing on the kitchen garden, the herb garden, the vegetable/flower garden as well as the cottage garden.

3.   Or, if you prefer, for an additional $20 you can maintain your own raised bed.  This 8 foot x 4 foot bed (which we will construct for you),  will be your very own to experiment with, planting and keeping what you will.

*At Blue Rock Station, we grow heirloom vegetables and fruits whenever possible, so that we will be able to save seeds year after year.  We also practice organic growing methods – using only natural fertilizers and pesticides.

Garden Club themes for each month include:

March
: Victorian Cottage Gardening:  Learn some of the basics of Victorian cottage gardening by viewing hundreds of beautiful photos Annie Warmke has taken during her European travels.  Annie will also offer tips and helpful hints learned from years of experience.

April: Natural Garden Insecticides - Kind to Humans & Animals:  The key to most garden pest control can be found by using vegetables and simple solutions made from common household items to create healthy pesticides – come prepared to make your very own.

May:  Spring Plant and Seed Exchange Party:  Bring along seeds, plants, garden items and magazines to trade or sell to other avid gardeners.  Informative garden workshops start the afternoon with trading and selling at the end.

June:  Building an Espalier for Fruit Trees (the BRS way):  Come prepared to get dirty while learning how to construct a simple wall made of bottles that will protect garden fruit trees from frost and wind.  Learn how to make raised beds as well.

July: Creating a Cottage Garden Path:  Learn how to create an attractive simple path in an established garden.  We’ll talk about the basics of Victorian cottage gardening and view hundreds of beautiful photos Annie Warmke took during her European travels.

August:  Learning to Grow a Winter Garden:  Simple easy ways to grow vegetables and herbs during the time we think nothing will grow outside.

September:  Autumn Harvest Exchange:  Come prepared with plants, fall decorations and garden related items to trade or sell to other avid gardeners.  Informative garden workshops start the afternoon with trading and selling at the end.

October:  Designs for the 2007 Victorian Cottage Garden:  Learn about cottage garden design or bring along your own designs – either way we’ll be admiring what we’ve accomplished this year and drooling over what we hope to do the next.  Traditional Victorian Cottage Garden photos will be used to offer ideas and insights.
