Rare Breed Chickens - 5 weeks  old

By 5 weeks it was clear that the wetlands - that had seemed so vast just a couple weeks earlier, was much too small to hold twenty-seven growing birds.

Most had now learned to fly up and roost on the chicken wire - making a mess of it and whatever lay below.  It was time to move these girls outdoors.

So we took an old grain bin that we had salvaged from a barn and converted it into a small chicken coop.  This was done by tipping it on its side, cutting a window and small door in the bottom - and using the original lid as the walk in door.

We kept the girls contained in a chicken wire pen for a week or so, then turned them loose to free-range.   It was a hard decision - but our fear of wild dogs and raccoons eventually gave way to our wanting the girls to run free.

Each night the chickens return to their hen house and are tucked in (locked up) for the night.  Thus far this has protected them  from everything but our own dog.  We did also have a hawk try to grab one - but he was too small or the chicken was by then too big.  The others helped their persecuted sister by hiding under our van.
