Rare Breed Chickens - 2 weeks  old

At some point during week 2, some of the chicks learned to fly.  After that, there was no keeping them in a box in our bathroom.  So we moved them to bigger and better digs.

Also, as they grew, the bigger birds began to peck at some of the smaller birds.  We had read that this is often due to over crowding.

The wetlands in the Earthship proved a perfect spot.  It had plants to run around and hide in, and plenty of dirt to scratch a burrow into.  We hung a heat lamp from above, but some chicken wire around to keep them contained - and life was good.

We also began to introduce some bugs into their life.  As we hoped these chicks would someday grow to help keep our gardens free of certain pests - we would toss in a stray worm or grass hopper once in a while.  The excitement this caused was like a bunch of sailors on shore leave on a Saturday night.
